WHC Oracle Edition 73
U12 Girls
Blues vs Basingstoke A’s - 1-3 and vs basingstoke bs - 5-0
Basingstoke As was a tough game, with one exceptional player looking very dominant. However, after spending the first half under the cosh and going 3 - 0 down, the girls came out fired up and playing at a higher level for the second half, getting one goal and putting shots past the posts to finish 3 - 1. Particular mention goes to Eloise and Aoife for getting stuck in and Jemima suffering a high stick to the mouth.
Basingstoke Bs was a chance to give a few players some valuable experience trying out new positions. Well done to Jemima for getting back on the field and then scoring, proving a goal to be better treatment than an ice pack! Smiles all round to finish.
Yellows vs salisbury
The yellow team had a big task this Sunday with three 30 minute games back-to-back against three different Salisbury teams. The first game saw the girls making good use of their wingers and scoring most of their five goals from perfectly delivered crosses cleanly finished at the far post. With two goals in reply, the Yellow team were clear victors.
The next two games were not so easy. A 3-4 loss and a 4-8 loss followed - both games were very close with plenty of chances, but in both cases Salisbury proved stronger in front of goal. However, there was no shame in the losses as the team performances overall were a league above where they were at the beginning of the season and everyone is looking forward to the next matches.
Purples vs Trojans - 6-0 and vs Romsey - 10-0
The Purples played a dominant game against a keen Trojans side, moving and transferring the ball around confidently, winning short corners and scoring three goals from them; a final 6-0 score was well earned. The second match resulted in a 10-0 win against a young Romsey team, unfortunately without a goal keeper. This allowed our girls to control the ball, show some confident individual stick skills on the ball and spread the goals across the team. Well done Purples.
Blacks vs Haslemere - 1-0 and vs Alton - 5-1
A sturdy test this first match, pitting the best two teams in Hampshire in a league, head-to-head at the Haslemere Woolmer Hill ground.
Gritty low block defending with physical players was Haslemere’s main tactic and the lack of space in the circle, which Winchester penetrated a lot, made for a tense game. Although it felt like Winchester deserved to win, they didn’t have the best guile in the circle to win enough penalty corners. The winner came from a PC, and the Haslemere goalie played very well at the near post.
A quality, attritional match which just maintained the Blacks 100% league record. This will be the key Hants Into challenge with Haslemere no doubt smarting at not making the final last year.
Second up were Alton who scared Winchester in the first half, equalising with a lucky bounce off a post, before Winchester woke up. The second half, with players rotating in all positions, saw some fantastic right wing play, the first two aerials of the season and great decision-making in goal for a 5-1 final scoreline.
U10s
Winchester U10s hosted many teams from Bournemouth and Trojans on a sunny Sunday morning at Kings’. With the older of the U10s not available, combined with some tough opposition resulted in mixed results however Lucy in goal had an outstanding tournament and the event presented a great opportunity for the younger of the group to get some game action. All in all a wonderful event with everyone coming off the pitch with smiles on their faces.
U8s
The U8s hosted Bournemouth and three Trojans teams for a morning of hockey in the beautiful sunshine.
Winchester 1s came back after an initial 5-0 loss to have a fantastic four matches, seeing them unbeaten with some great team play.
Winchester 2s had similar success only losing to Trojans 1s.
Everyone had a great morning and for the majority of the players it was their first time on a competitive pitch.
